For a brisk circular stroll which is easily accessible, Clifton Country Park near Swinton takes some beating.
There’s a play park for children and a wooden platform for feeding the ducks, and a path around the reservoir which takes around half an hour in total to walk.
There are plenty of signs that you’re not exactly in the heart of the countryside. This, after all, is a resource reclaimed from the area’s recent history as part of the Lancashire coal fields. But it’s a pleasant enough place for a break and an alternative to Heaton Park.
Clifton Country Park is a haven for dog walkers and there’s adequate free car parking with a visitor centre housing toilets and information services year round. In the spring and summer there’s a ranger service, with talks for kids and adults alike.
