Turn a corner at certain times of year in a traditional German town and there’s a good chance that you’ll chance upon festivities relating to the schützenfest.
These pictures taken in Barntrup, a town in the Lippe district of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, capture some of the pomp and ceremony associated with the traditional shooting festival.
The winner of the marksman competition gets to be crowned king of the schützenfest and also select a ceremonial queen. But it’s an expensive business, with the winner expected to pay for many of the celebrations that take place and ensure that they have suitable outfits too.
Accordingly, some of those people who miss the target might not be quite so bad shots as they want people to believe!
